Murder or Manslaughter? Anti-Same Sex Gangs Murder Two Pro LGBTQ Group Members
By Abu Bakarr Bangura
Two esteemed members of a gender equality and pro-LGBTQ
rights group, Nitrogen Family have died following assaults by Islamic gangs
during separate raids in June 16 and August 17, 2023, respectively.
The first, Kelvin Clifford Thompson died on the June 21,
2023, after been assaulted by gangs in Makeni, Northern Sierra Leone. On June
16, 2023, he was among gays, lesbians and bisexual people, who had converged in
a secret location to enjoy themselves and have fun (LB party).
Leader of Nitrogen Family and buddy of late Thompson,
Mohamed Faray Kargbo, who attended the event with the deceased narrowly escaped
the attacks. The police said they were investigating but made no arrests.
The second, Mohamed Gbla, aka Skinny, had attended a
wedding ceremony of a same sex couple who tied the knot on August 20, 2023,
after falling in love few years ago. He was mercilessly beaten by the gangs who
disrupted the ceremony as they claim is it illegal and against the Sierra
Leonean culture. He eventually died on August 23, 2023.
According to an eyewitness, who prefers anonymity, the
police while manhandling the deceased, vowed to get rid of the kingpin of
Nitrogen Family, Mohamed Faray Kargbo who they believe is sponsoring not only
his group but many other pro-LGBT groups in the country. They believe he was
surreptitiously promoting LGBT under the guise of running a drama/film social
group.
This recent trend by religious groups and cultural groups
is worrisome for the LGBT community in Sierra Leone not least at a time when
their numbers keep soaring.
Few months ago, Islamic leaders in the east end of
Freetown, Thunder Hill protested the rise of gay young people in their
community. The risk of being associated with same sex is becoming scarier daily
with more and more groups going into oblivion.
Homosexuality is illegal in the country and the law
enforcement agencies are doing everything possible to crack down on anything
related to that practice.
