Seven Stand Trial for Conspiracy & Kidnapping

In a courtroom packed with tension and emotion, three Nigerians and four Sierra Leoneans faced six counts of charges, including conspiracy, larceny, and kidnapping. The alleged victim, Nigerian investor Onyeka Obasi Umeji, testified before Magistrate Mark Ngegba of the Pademba Road Magistrate Court, detailing his ordeal at the hands of the accused. The incident revolves around an investment venture with his Nigerian associate Austine Chkwuwik in Sierra Leone.

Umeji recounted the harrowing events, stating that he had been lured to a meeting location by Austine, who had informed him about staying at Jessica One Hotel in Lumley. Confused and unfamiliar with Freetown, Umeji attempted to reach Austine, whose unresponsiveness raised concerns. Eventually, he encountered the accused, leading to a nightmarish encounter.

According to Umeji’s testimony, the alleged leader of the gang, identified as the first accused, forcibly removed him from his vehicle. A police officer, identified as the fourth accused Salifu Yemah Samura, reportedly collaborated with the perpetrators, subjecting Umeji to physical assault and theft. The accused allegedly seized a total of $1,200, and in a subsequent confrontation, demanded his wallet containing $80,000. Umeji’s refusal led to further violence, leaving him injured and disoriented.

Seeking justice, Umeji promptly reported the incident to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters. Following his statement, he cooperated with law enforcement to trace the accused. During this process, Umeji received threatening calls from the fourth accused, who identified himself as a police officer. The situation escalated as the fourth accused demanded the return of the funds at a specific location.

Umeji’s testimony continued, detailing the tense encounter when law enforcement confronted the accused. An attempt to apprehend the alleged criminals resulted in the capture of several suspects, including Nigerians Price Oscar, Emeka Onigbo, and Ferdinand Oyeozin, while the fourth accused managed to evade capture. The victim reported to have witnessed Austine among the accused, though his initial smile turned to tears.

In the absence of legal representation for the defendants, the first accused cross-examined Umeji. A query about Umeji’s business registration prompted a response revealing his lack of familiarity with local regulatory processes.

Magistrate Mark Ngegba adjourned the proceedings to August 18, 2023.
