As political tension getting worsen in Sierra Leone especially the capital city of Freetown where some members, supporters and sympathisers of the All Peoples Congress (APC) party the main opposition were target by the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) ruling government.
In the bustling city of Freetown, Martin Kargbo a
resident of 24 Abbot Street, Fourah Bay, eastern part of Freetown a sympathiser
of the APC party and satellite technician was arrested during a demonstration
after the pronouncement of 24th June, 2023 elections as the APC
party supporters believed that the elections were rigged.
According to a friend of Martin Kargbo, Martin was
beaten, humiliated and tortured by the Sierra Leone Police that always
protecting and serving the government of the day and failed to secure and
protect the citizens of the State was taken to the Ross Road Police Station and
he was incarcerated for two days and the protest was ongoing and the protesters
stormed the police station to free those who were demonstration.
He revealed that Martin among others were opportune to
escape and his where about is yet unknown as the Sierra Leone Police declared
him and others Wanted.
Dauda Mansaray a relative of Martin Kargbo, disclosed to
this this medium that Martin was an admirer of the APC party due to its
developmental strides during their reign and Martin Kargbo was a supporter of
APC party.
According to Dauda, some APC supporters around the Fourah
Bay Community demonstrated for several days after the elections were pronounced
on Wednesday 28th June, 2023, adding, “the political landscape
underwent a systematic change, and Martin known for his unwavering belief to
the APC party, became a target of persecution of SLPP supporters in the area
where he stay. The precarious balance between political affiliations and
professional responsibilities became increasingly difficult to maintain and the
political climate grew more volatile with clashes between the ruling SLPP
government and the opposition APC party supporters and sympathisers, resulting
to the loss of lives, arrest and humiliation of APC supporters, members and
sympathisers”.
A resident of Fourah Bay, Ramadan Algali revealed to this
medium that Martin Kargbo among others found themselves at the center of the
storm, enduring multiple beatings during police and military personnel raided
firing tear gas canisters and life bullets at the APC party headquarters at Brookfields
in Freetown, when the party protested the election results.
This medium further gathered that due to Martin Kargbo’s
active role during June 24, 2023 general elections finally put his life under
threat and relocated to different addresses to avoid apprehension, beating and
death from supporters and the police has declared him wanted for incitement and
riotous conduct.
Hundreds of APC party supporters and sympathizers have
been unlawfully arrested, detained and charged to court, upto press time the
where about of Martin Kargbo is unknown.
